There’s some bad news today for those of you dreaming that you might one day enjoy a roll in the hay with highly-talented video star Paris Hilton: the hotel heiress has declined an offer to have a sex doll made in her image.

An outraged Hilton said: “I turn down perverted things, some sex things. Like a Paris Hilton blow-up doll … They were like, ‘They’ll sell for $50,000 each, it’ll be the real-life you.’ And I’m like, ‘I really don’t want a real-life me with anyone, anywhere. No!’”

At $50k a pop, we can only assume that the proposed sex machine would have been a fully-functioning cyberminx, ready and willing to perform for the cameras in One Night in RoboParis. Sadly, we’ll never know.

Artificial skin on today’s silicone sex dolls has come a long way, giving the user a smooth and pleasurable feeling. But as sex dolls move closer to sex robots — androids that provide a more truly “human” experience — the body’s largest organ, the skin, must become more and more realistic.

Robotics professor Takashi Maeno and his research team at Keio University have teamed up with cosmetics manufacturer Kao Corporation to develop artificial skin that studies show feels natural.

Previously, artificial skin inventors have been working on pressure-sensitive skin, which uses organic field-effect transistors. This was an evolution, but this new skin seems to have topped that.

The researchers report that 10 out of 12 people agree that it feels like regular human skin. To take the subjectivity out of the surveys, they also used machines to confirm that the characteristics of the artificial skin were similar to the skin of organic, natural humans.

The real human skin feeling is attained by an outer 1-cm thick elastic silicone “dermis” with a 0.2-mm thick firm urethane “epidermis.” Then, to give it texture, tiny hexagonal indentations are etched into the urethane epidermis.

The report suggests a projected medical application would be covering robotic hands used in remote-teleoperated breast exams. However, we at SexRobot.com see an application of human hands touching the robotic skin breasts.

There has been much talk recently of robots and ethics—well, in particular—sex with robots and ethics. And beyond ethics, as robots become more life-like, legal issues.

As it is right now, we don’t have real “sex robots” so there’s really no ethical or legal questions to answer. But, with the exponential acceleration of technology, human-like robots will emerge soon enough.

What people do now to their own beautiful, silicone dolls is their own business, as it should be. But at what point along the evolution of robots do we start applying human laws of protection to them? An absurd thought? I don’t think so.

Let’s make it simple to understand, and move forward to the time when robots will respond with appropriate human reactions to the input they receive. Not only will they respond with pleasure when they are having sex with you, but they will respond with pain if you hurt them. For all intents and purposes, they will seem real to you. So inflicting pain to, or performing illegal activities with them, will cross the lines of ethics. But should it cross the lines of the law?

Robots will move towards mimicking humans, in all their senses. And humans will evolve toward robots, beginning with implants, limbs and finally brain augmentations and complete replacements. What will be robotic and what will be human?

Given this meeting of evolutions, here are some specific examples of questions to ponder:

Can a robot doll owner film the torture and “murder” of a sex robot and place it on the internet? Sell it as a robot snuff film?

Should it be a crime to have sex with a 12 year old robot? Should it be a crime simply to make such a doll?

Can you kick around your robot puppy?

Can a robot be made into a sex slave, forced to live in the closet, chained up, when not in use.

All these things are illegal with humans, but legal with the “robots” or “dolls” of today.

I think it’s obvious to most rational people that as the distinction between robots and humans blur, these should be treated just as are crimes against humans. And, I think we can also agree, that with the today’s primitive technology, no such actions should yet be criminal. So the question is, at what point do we criminalize these actions? How do you define this point in their evolution?

With the price of sex dolls at several thousand dollars a pop, I’m sure there are considerably many times more people that are curious about them than there are actual owners. If you don’t have one, you can somewhat satisfy your curiosity by going to the manufacturers’ sites or the various doll galleries (listed in the sidebar). The sellers will provide you with all the technical details, plus some photos, and the galleries will show photos of dolls posed in both clothed and nude pictures.

That’s good, but, we all know what everyone is really wondering about—how do they function sexually? Well, since they really don’t “perform” sex, we’re really interested in how they “receive” sex, and what types of sexual things people actually do with them, and how the dolls handle it. Doll galleries—at least the areas open to the general public—don’t generally show this and neither do the doll companies. So where can you go to see them in action?

Well, as you know, there is a porn site for everything and there happens to be one that shows videos and photos of people having their way with the famous RealDolls.
